How to Generate APAAR ID βSchool Education in Meghalaya β Overview for UDISE Plus 2026-27
Meghalaya β "the abode of clouds" β has 12,000+ schools across 12 districts, with English as the primary medium of instruction at secondary level, alongside Khasi and Garo mother-tongue schools at primary level. The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) manages secondary and higher secondary examinations. Meghalaya's unique Community-based and church-managed school system is central to its education landscape. For UDISE Plus 2026-27, Meghalaya schools must complete data at udiseplus.gov.in with accurate church/community school management classification.
Schools in Meghalaya fall under the Education Department, Government of Meghalaya for administrative purposes. The secondary examination board is MBOSE (Meghalaya Board of School Education). All school-level data β student enrollment, teacher profiles, and infrastructure β is reported annually to the Ministry of Education through the UDISE+ portal.
Key Education Facts β Meghalaya in UDISE+ 2026-27
- Meghalaya has 12,000+ schools in 12 districts β a high proportion (60%+) are managed by churches (Catholic, Presbyterian, Anglican) or community organizations, not the state government
- Meghalaya's literacy rate of 74.4% is average for Northeast India; rural East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi district schools serve dispersed village populations with challenging access
- Meghalaya is one of the few states where English medium is dominant even at primary level β English medium must be coded in UDISE+ for the vast majority of Meghalaya schools
- The state has dedicated Khasi-medium and Garo-medium primary schools β these tribal language medium schools need mother-tongue language coding in UDISE+ for NEP 2020 mother-tongue policy tracking
- Church-managed schools in Meghalaya receive government grants under the aided school system β "Private Aided" is the correct management type but schools must also flag religious minority management in UDISE+
- The Meghalaya Residential and Day Boarding Schools (MRDS) programme has upgraded school facilities in remote areas β MRDS-funded upgrades must be reflected in UDISE+ infrastructure data
- Under UDISE Plus 2026-27, Meghalaya is implementing APAAR IDs for 6 lakh+ students β Aadhaar penetration has improved significantly with the state's digital birth registration programme
UDISE Plus Meghalaya β State-Specific Data Entry Guide
Common Challenges β Meghalaya Schools
- Meghalaya's predominantly church and community-managed school system creates complex management classification challenges in UDISE+ β schools managed by multiple churches (some aided, some unaided) need careful per-school classification
- Rural Khasi Hills and Garo Hills schools are located in dense forests and hills with limited road access β data collection visits by education officers are infrequent and UDISE+ data may be stale
- Some Meghalaya government schools have been de facto taken over by communities β official government school management type in UDISE+ may not reflect ground reality of community control
- Meghalaya's annual heavy rainfall causes landslides that damage school infrastructure β infrastructure condition data in UDISE+ must be updated after each monsoon season, not just annually
- APAAR ID seeding is challenging for Khasi and Garo tribal children whose names use traditional tribal naming systems without father's surname β Aadhaar records may have name format inconsistencies
Data Entry Tips for Meghalaya Teachers
- Church-managed aided schools in Meghalaya should select "Private Aided (Religious Minority)" in the management type β this unlocks the correct grant parameters for mission school governance
- For schools in remote Khasi and Garo Hills, coordinate with the Block Resource Person for a pre-monsoon data collection visit (AprilβMay) and then update UDISE+ after monsoon with final figures
- Meghalaya schools should update post-monsoon infrastructure data each October β landslide damage to school buildings must be reported as "damaged/unsafe" for infrastructure repair grant access
- For Khasi and Garo medium primary schools, use Khasi or Garo as the medium in UDISE+ β not English or "Regional Language" β to ensure correct mother-tongue education policy tracking
- APAAR ID name issues for tribal students: use the official name in Aadhaar (as registered) in SDMS even if it differs from school records β request a name correction from the DEO office for UDISE+ school register alignment
