How to Generate APAAR ID βSchool Education in Nagaland β Overview for UDISE Plus 2026-27
Nagaland, home to 16 major Naga tribes, has 3,400+ schools across 16 districts managed by the Nagaland Board of Secondary Education (NBSE) and the School Education Department, Nagaland. English is the sole medium of instruction at all levels β a distinctive feature of Nagaland's education system. The state has a strong church school tradition with Baptist and Catholic mission schools being foundational to Naga education. For UDISE Plus 2026-27, Nagaland schools must complete data at udiseplus.gov.in with special attention to the church/mission school management classification unique to this state.
Schools in Nagaland fall under the School Education Department, Government of Nagaland for administrative purposes. The secondary examination board is NBSE (Nagaland Board of Secondary Education). All school-level data β student enrollment, teacher profiles, and infrastructure β is reported annually to the Ministry of Education through the UDISE+ portal.
Key Education Facts β Nagaland in UDISE+ 2026-27
- Nagaland has 3,400+ schools in 16 districts β a compact but diverse network where English is the universal medium, making Nagaland unique among Indian states for UDISE+ medium coding
- Nagaland's literacy rate of 79.6% reflects strong English-medium education traditions; the state has near-universal primary enrolment in valley districts but lower rates in remote hill areas
- Baptist mission schools (Nagaland Baptist Church Council) and Catholic schools account for over 35% of Nagaland's school seats β these are classified as "Private Aided (Religious Minority)" in UDISE+
- Nagaland has a unique Village Development Board (VDB) school ownership model β some village-community owned schools don't neatly fit into the standard UDISE+ management categories
- The state has significant teacher vacancy challenges β NBSE-affiliated government schools in remote Frontier districts (Tuensang, Mon, Phek) often have 30β50% vacancy rates reflected in UDISE+ teacher data
- Nagaland's Samagra Shiksha implementation is monitored through UDISE+ data β the state uses UDISE+ school capacity and teacher data to plan mobile teacher deployment in remote areas
- Under UDISE Plus 2026-27, Nagaland is targeting APAAR ID for 3.5 lakh+ students β Aadhaar penetration has improved with district-level Aadhaar seva kendras now operational in all 16 districts
UDISE Plus Nagaland β State-Specific Data Entry Guide
Common Challenges β Nagaland Schools
- Nagaland's Village Development Board schools do not have a precise UDISE+ management category β VDB schools must be classified as "Private Unaided" which may not accurately reflect their community-funded nature
- Remote Frontier district schools (Mon, Tuensang borders with Myanmar) face security-related constraints β school operations and data collection can be impacted by insurgency-related incidents
- Mission school UDISE+ classification requires distinguishing between fully aided, partially aided, and unaided mission schools β this distinction is often overlooked by school principals during SDMS data entry
- APAAR ID generation for Naga tribal students with traditional names (clan-based, no standard surname) creates Aadhaar name format issues β tribe-specific naming conventions need special handling in SDMS
- Nagaland government schools in remote areas have extremely high teacher vacancies β entering accurate vacancy data in UDISE+ is sometimes resisted by school heads as it signals administrative failure
Data Entry Tips for Nagaland Teachers
- Nagaland school principals should enter English as the medium for all classes in UDISE+ β this is correct and consistent with Nagaland's education policy; do not use "Regional Language" or "Other" for the medium field
- Baptist and Catholic mission schools should select "Private Aided (Religious Minority)" in the management type in UDISE+ β this is the correct classification for grant calculation under the state's aided school norms
- For VDB community schools, classify as "Private Unaided" and use the school remarks section to note "VDB/Community Managed" β the DEO can flag this to the state for correct grant targeting
- Enter actual teacher count (filled posts only) in the teacher module β vacant positions should NOT be entered as filled; vacancy data in UDISE+ is used by Nagaland for teacher deployment decisions
- APAAR ID name issues for Naga students: use the student's full name as in Aadhaar β if the Aadhaar has only a single name (no surname), SDMS can handle single-name students with a workaround available from the DEO office
